Ronan was born in California, USA and educated at Presentation Brothers College (PBC) and National University of Ireland Cork (UCC). He graduated with Honours B.A. and Masters Degrees in Business Economics in 1999.

He captained PBC teams to Junior (1992) and Senior (1995) Cup victories. In 1996 Ronan won an All-Ireland under-20 medal with UCC and in 1997 he made his Ireland under-21 debut against Scotland and helped Ireland to a Triple Crown victory in 1998. He won his first A-cap against Italy in 1999. Ronan was a member of the ‘Con’ team that won the AIB 1999 AIL and was selected for the Munster European Cup team in the 1998 season.

He was selected for his first Irish International cap in the Six Nations Championship against Scotland in February 2000. He scored a Six Nations record 30 points against Italy and a record equalising 10 conversions against Japan. He is Ireland’s and European Cup Competition’s record points scorer and he finished as top scorer inthe 2005 and 2006 Six Nations Competition.

Ronan was selected for two British and Irish Lions tours: 2001, Australia and 2005, New Zealand – one test cap.)

In 2006 Ronan won a European Cup medal with Munster and a Triple Crown success with Ireland.
